- William Shakespeare is commemorated by a monument erected in 1912 on the south side of Southwark Cathedral’s nave and William Shakespeare’s brother, Edmond, is buried at the cathedral.
- John Harvard (of Harvard University fame) was the son of a Southwark butcher who emigrated to America in 1637. Like Shakespeare, Harvard is commemorated in Southwark Cathedral.
- Vinopolis sits on the site of the old Anchor Brewery, which was established in 1710 and was once the largest brewery in the world. Excavations in the area near Vinopolis exposed the remains of a Roman wine store, evidence that wine has been an important part of the lifestyle of this particular area of London for nearly 2000 years.
- In recent years, Bankside has frequently provided locations for film-makers. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason, Entrapment, Lock, Stock, Two Smoking Barrels and Run Fat Boy Run all used locations in and near Borough Market. And if you’re a fan of the Spooks TV series, you’ll also recognize scenes in and around Bankside.
