A BROAD approach to the future of Bankside
Southwark is being transformed, with many new developments either underway or planned. These projects will affect the quality of life for the growing number of people who live and work in the area.
That’s why there is a need for BROAD – Bankside Residents for Appropriate Development.
BROAD was set up in 2000 to challenge the building of a 32-storey residential tower close to Tate Modern. Over the following six years, BROAD fought a long battle to oppose the 'Tate Tower' development. This paid off in 2006 when a new developer bought the site and abandoned the tower in favour of creating quality public space.
BROAD has recently responded to the proposed new Tate extension plans and will continue to influence the detailed design of the project as it progresses. Other developments that will have a major impact on the area are the long-term proposals for Samson House, Blackfriars Station, and the new riverside landscaping around Falcon Point. We are also working to influence the design of the new public space outside Tate Modern.
